FEDIAF Statistics: Europe is home to 352 million pets

Companion animals are firmly part of European households, both emotionally and economically. According to the latest FEDIAF (The European Pet Food Federation) statistics, Europe is home to 352 million pets. Cats lead the way with 129 million, followed by 106 million dogs, 52 million ornamental birds, 30 million small mammals, 23 million aquaria, and 12 million terraria pets (EPFI).
Out of Europe’s 166 million households, 50% own a pet, with 26% owning at least one cat and 25% owning at least one dog. This underlines not only the social but also the economic relevance of pets in the region.
The Pet Food Economy
The European pet food sector has reached a total market value of €29.3 billion, producing 9.1 million tonnes of pet food annually. Growth remains robust, with the market expanding by 9% in value. Related services and products—such as accessories and veterinary care—add another €24.6 billion to the sector, also showing 9% growth.
The industry is supported by more than 400 pet food companies and 500+ production plants spread across Europe. This ecosystem provides not just nutrition but also jobs, innovation, and economic resilience.
Production and Market Splits
• 58% of all pet food produced is for dogs, while 35% is for cats.
• In value terms, 47% of the market is generated by the dog food sector and 39% by the cat food sector.
When breaking down product types:
• Dog food is mainly dry (61% by volume), followed by wet food (30%) and treats (9%). In value, dry accounts for 50%, wet 26%, and treats 24%.
• Cat food is dominated by wet formats (60% by volume and value), with dry representing 36% (volume) and 30% (value), while treats account for 3% of volume and 10% of value.
Why This Matters
The numbers show that pets are more than companions; they represent a dynamic and growing pet economy that combines welfare, nutrition, and innovation. With nearly half of Europe’s households living with pets, the demand for high-quality, safe, and sustainable pet food is set to continue its upward trend.
