Postpartum Management in Dairy Farms: Protecting Cow Health and Farm Economics

27/01/2026

Recorded in Turkiye at the 3rd Fatro & Gunesli Regional Animal Health Symposium, this interview focuses on why postpartum management is a cornerstone of modern dairy farming. Dr. Alice Carbonari explains that correct postpartum management is essential to safeguard cow health and, as a direct result, maintain strong milk production.

She notes that if postpartum management is not handled well, farms can face not only reproductive disorders but also metabolic diseases—issues that can weaken the farmer’s overall economic balance. Carbonari also emphasizes that lactating cows are generally more susceptible and “more delicate,” making herd management increasingly challenging as production systems intensify.

According to her, newer strategies, therapies, and treatments can help farms better manage these high-risk animals. She also underlines the critical role of the dry period, describing it as fundamental for fertility. Proper dry period management, she says, is not a secondary option—it is necessary to support fertility and ultimately secure consistent milk output.
